Arguably, a combination of human, physical and global pressures will profoundly influence Africa in coming decades. Some of these forces are truly exogenous: endowments of land, water and natural resources are largely predetermined. Others are not: climate change, demographic trends and changes in the global economy involve African countries as well as influence them. What they all have in common, however, is that by and large these “mega-trends” do not respond quickly to actions taken by individual countries – as in the case of climate change – or Africa is small relative to the global size of the phenomenon in the case of global trade .Countries acting independently or collectively must adjust and adapt to them
