01/10/2012 - Compared to the rest of the country, southern Madagascar experiences cyclical droughts that threaten the population’s food security. In general, the country’s agricultural performance has remained weak, mainly due to low yields, poor basic infrastructure and lack of rural credit. To overcome these constraints, the government has developed sector policies and strategies that notably provide for the rehabilitation of irrigation areas such as the Lower Mangoky Scheme.

17/07/2012 - The economic crisis of the 1980s, exacerbated by the armed conflicts of the 1990s in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has resulted in a drop in farmer assistance, desertion of farms and lack of maintenance of rural roads. This situation has specifically led to decreased productivity, difficulties in the supply of farm inputs and equipment, and increased inaccessibility to production areas, thus giving rise to food insecurity.
