Le Burundi se relève progressivement d’une crise socio-politique profonde, qui a détruit le tissu productif de son économie. L’économie reste encore fragile, du fait de sa forte dépendance au secteur primaire en termes de contribution au PIB (40 %). Le PIB par habitant s’élevait à 215 dollars EU en 2012, contre 286 dollars EU avant la crise de 1993.
