Kenya Selected Projects

03/05/2016 - Access to electricity in Kenya remains relatively limited. Only half the population has access to it, at a cost much higher than in other African economies. On top of this there is the instability of the network, with frequent blackouts, which raises questions about large scale reliance on hydroelectric energy production.

18/09/2015 - The Lake Turkana wind power project involves the development and construction of a 300 MW wind farm. The project is located at a remote location, approximately 12 kilometres east of Lake Turkana in northwestern Kenya. The project area falls within a valley between two mountains that produce a tunnel effect in which wind streams are accelerated to high speeds. The wind farm will comprise 365 wind turbines of a capacity of 850 KW each. In addition to the Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs) and their foundations, a 33 kV electrical collector network will be constructed.

16/09/2015 - Although Kenya produces just enough power to meet its current demand for households and businesses tied to the grid, it is constantly plagued with power outages that cause not only inconveniences, but a loss of income for those businesses that depend upon it. A large part of the problem is the country’s reliance on hydropower, which fuels about half of Kenya’s installed capacity. Since there is no reserve margin for reduced hydropower generation in times of drought, the government must pay for emergency generation.

19/09/2013 - Within the current global energy crisis, interconnecting the regional electric energy networks is the best alternative to transfer expensive thermal generation into regional as well as international power markets.

19/09/2013 - The Turkana Wind Power Project in Kenya will add 300MW to power generation capacity and will benefit Kenya by providing clean and affordable energy that will reduce the overall energy cost to end consumers.

19/09/2013 - In a country where 84% of the population does not have energy access and where the geothermal potential is among the greatest in the world, the Menengai geothermal steam field development project will exploit a portion of this potential to provide power to about 500,000 households and 300,000 businesses. The project was approved in 2011 and is expected to be completed in 2016.

13/08/2013 - Nakuru, Kenya's fourth largest city is a major industrial and tourist center. Prior to the AfDB Group’s intervention, unreliable water supply and sanitation services resulted in scaling down and ultimate relocation of industries, resulting in high incidence of water-borne diseases. Women and children spent long hours collecting water or buying it at a very high cost.
