Human and Social Development - Review of the Bank's Experience in the Financing of Dam Projects (270 KB)

Abstract: Total Bank loans to the 10 projects examined under this review amounts to UA 122.07 million, representing an average of 15.9% of the project costs. Bank financing went primarily to civil engineering (8 out of the 10 projects). It also financed electromechanical equipment in three projects as well as the training and resettlement of populations (1 project). On the whole, the implementation of the ten (10) projects was satisfactory. Six projects are considered to have performed satisfactorily as they have attained the results defined at appraisal. Three of the multi-purpose dam projects have failed to perform satisfactorily.

Energy & Power - Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia: Energy sector impact study (263 KB)

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to assess the socio-economic impact of the sixteen ADB electricity-sector interventions on the target end-user groups in the three countries. The projects, in general, have been effectively implemented and have functioned as intended. In all cases, they appear to have had positive impacts, although the general lack of preproject baseline studies does not permit these to be quantified with any precision.

Botswana: Morupule Power Project (350 KB)

Abstract: A pre-feasibility study, whose aim was to meet the growing power demand, in medium term recommended, in March ‘1981, a master plan for the development of the Botswana electrical system up to the year 2000 and, confirming a previous pre-feasibility study, the scaled development of a complete 3 x 30 MW coal-fired power station in Morupule and the interconnection of Shashe (Northern) and Southern divisions, formerly separately operated, before further extensions. Morupule Power Project (MPP) was the first phase of a’ three-staged development aiming at installation of 90 MW in 1988, 90 MW in 1990 in order to reach 420 MW installed capacity by the year 2000.

Zambia: Rehabilitation of Kafue Gorge Hydro - power Station (0.9 MB)

Abstract: Kafue Gorge Power Station (KGPS), 6 x 150 MW installed capacity represents 56 % of total power installed capacity (1600 MW) of Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO). It was disabled by fire on 26th March 1989 and available capacity in the country was reduced to only 700 MW. This originated losses of foreign exchange revenues from electricity sales to Zimbabwe and power outages for industrial and domestic economic activities. Zambia, formerly power exporter was obliged to import electricity from neighboring Zaire and Zimbabwe.
