17/07/2012 - The economic crisis of the 1980s, exacerbated by the armed conflicts of the 1990s in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has resulted in a drop in farmer assistance, desertion of farms and lack of maintenance of rural roads. This situation has specifically led to decreased productivity, difficulties in the supply of farm inputs and equipment, and increased inaccessibility to production areas, thus giving rise to food insecurity.

The Bank, through the natural resources and environment management, and the compliance and safeguard divisions, is holding two regional workshops in Dakar, Senegal (July 5-6, 2012) for francophone participants and Nairobi, Kenya (July 12-13, 2012) for Anglophone participants. Serving as a platform to share experiences and lessons learned in implementing Environmental and Social Management Plans, the workshop will bring together eighty-five (85) environmental and social specialists implementing agriculture and natural resources management projects in an effort to enhance their capacity in implementing ESMPs.

21/06/2012 - The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) approved on Wednesday, a 1-billion South African rand (ZAR) (About USD 117 million) sovereign guaranteed line of credit to the Land and Agricultural Development Bank of South Africa for on-lending to the country’s emerging farmers, commercial farmers as well as to agricultural cooperatives and agri-related businesses. The support will help to mobilize financial resources for the agricultural sector, ultimately contributing to job creation and income generation.

22/05/2012 - The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) approved on 16 May in Tunis, an equity investment of USD 100 million to Agvance Africa, the first agribusiness-focused Fund of Funds on the African continent. The strategic objective of Agvance Africa is to increase private investment flows into the agribusiness sector on the continent to address growing food security concerns and unleash the largely unexploited potential of African agriculture and agribusiness sectors.

16/05/2012 - An African Development Bank (AfDB) mission is currently in Khartoum, Sudan, working with Government authorities and other stakeholders to develop a program intended to build resilience to droughts and provide sustainable livelihoods in the Greater Horn of Africa (GHOA). The mission is headed by AfDB livestock specialist, Umar Lawal, together with Abdul B. Kamara, AfDB’s Resident Representative for Sudan, and various experts from the AfDB and from the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
