ADB President on a four-day official visit to Rwanda

Kigali, 22 May 2006 – The African Development Bank Group president, Mr. Donald Kaberuka, on Monday, 22 May started a four-day official visit to Kigali, Rwanda.

During his visit, President Kaberuka will hold a series of high-level talks with Rwandan government officials, business leaders, civil society representatives, as well as development partners and heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Rwanda.

Mr. Kaberuka, who is on his maiden visit to Rwanda since becoming president of the African Development Bank on 1 September 2005, will on Tuesday, 23 May, address the 3rd Rwandan Investment Conference on the theme: "Where to find resources. Financial engineering at the service of investment and growth."

President Kaberuka will later on 24 May 2006 visit two ADB-financed projects in Rwanda, namely; the ongoing Cyangugu-Bugarama road construction and ETO Technical School in Gitarama. 

A press conference scheduled to take place at the end of his visit will be preceded by the inauguration of the ADB Rwanda National Office on Thursday, 25 May 2006.

President Kaberuka’s high-level contacts have scheduled audiences with President Paul Kagame and Prime Minister Bernard Makusa of Rwanda. He will also have a working session with the Rwandan Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Mr. James Musoni. During his project visits, President Kaberuka will be accompanied by the Rwandan Minister of Infrastructure, Mr. Stanislas Kamanzi, Minister of Education, Mrs. Jean d’Arc Mujamariya and the Minister in Charge of Science and Technology, Mr. Romain Murenzi. He will also be accompanied by the Rwandan Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr. Protais Mitali, during his meeting with private sector and civil society representatives. He will inaugurate the ADB Rwanda National Office in the presence of Mr. Charles Murigande, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Mr. Protais Mitali, Minister of Trade and Industry.

The Bank Group’s operations in Rwanda started in 1974. To date, the Bank’s cumulative commitments in the country are estimated at US$ 680 million (376 billion Rwandan Francs) for 58 operations.
