AfDB Resident Representative in Ghana, Alieu Jeng, on Friday took part in the commissioning of work on the Akatsi-Aflao Road Project. Work on the road was commissioned by Ghanaian President, John Kufuor, in a ceremony attended by traditional rulers, political leaders, development partners and people in the Volta region. The road project, some 58 kilometres, is a component of the larger Tema-Aflao Road project, being funded by the African Development Bank. This important road forms part of the regional network that connects Ghana to other countries in the ECOWAS sub-region, principally Togo, Benin and Nigeria. It is an important contribution to trade, agriculture and regional integration in West Africa. President Kufuor used the occasion to mention some of the numerous projects, in various sectors, that are receiving funding from the Bank. He thanked the Bank for being the country’s reliable partner in efforts meeting the MDGs. He also highlighted the role the AfDB country office was playing in the implementation of the projects. Speaking during the event, the AfDB resident representative highlighted the importance the Bank attaches to infrastructure development in Ghana, as an instrument to accelerate economic growth, reduce poverty and support Ghana’s ambitions to achieve middle income status in the short to medium term.
