AfDB Deploys New Field Office Resident Representatives

The Bank Group on January 31, 2011 in Tunis launched an induction and orientation session for newly-appointed Resident Representatives (ResReps). By organizing the program at the beginning of their assignment and at the beginning of the New Year, the Bank aims at positioning its operational “Generals” in the field, to spur a new operational focus with quality at entry as its guiding principle.

The comprehensive training program organized by the Human Resources Department (CHRM), covers every aspect of Bank Group management and operations, including among others: communication; strategic dialogue and operational leadership; dimensions of protocol representation; budget and financial management; human resources and internal management; audit experiences; private sector and business continuity; using office tools such as SAP/MM for better management.

Decentralization is a strategic choice, both for the Bank Group and its shareholders. Currently, the Bank has 26 regional offices with four more to be opened in Fragile States in 2011. Furthermore, President Donald Kaberuka recently explained that the Bank Group would open three other offices in Tokyo, Washington and Brussels. “Due to its growth and its reputation, the Bank Group would need to embark on more significant activities outside the continent,” Mr. Kaberuka said in a recent interview.

The new team has proven experience in the Bank Group operations. The deployment is therefore a reaffirmation of the commitment to enhance its development activities in the continent through decentralization.

Underscoring the strategic importance of Bank operations, Vice-president Aloysius Ordu and his team spent two days focusing on operational knowledge, country dialogue, and quality at entry and results. They also discussed new operations spirit; importance of operational knowledge work; expectations from country dialogue; and how best to manage portfolio in the field. According to CHRM induction and orientation assistant, Nadia Beji, the participants were happy and satisfied with the program. “They had a variety of key questions on operations issues. It was also an occasion for them to establish relations with other managers,” she said.

The induction and orientation sessions will run through February 10, 2011.
