While on a three-day official visit to Niger, the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group President, Donald Kaberuka, commissioned work on the Dori-Tera road which links Niger and Burkina Faso. During the commissioning, which was jointly chaired with Niger’s Equipment Minister, Lamido Moumouni Harouna, Mr. Kaberuka underscored the importance of the road to regional integration efforts. He stressed that the AfDB would not spare any efforts when it comes to supporting such projects.

"It is a great pleasure for me to join you in commissioning the work on the project which is the first step towards concretizing this ambitious project for which the AfDB has provided CFAF 20 billion," Mr. Kaberuka said while making a speech during the commissioning.

"This funding, to which counterpart funds from Burkina Faso, Niger, the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) and Liptako-Gourma Authority will be added, will make it possible to complete sections of the project within twenty-four months," Mr. Kaberuka said.

"The project reflects the exemplary partnership between the AfDB and Niger," he said, adding that since starting operations in the country in 1970, the AfDB had financed 63 projects for a total commitment of more than CFAF 285 billion.

"… this road project is a concrete manifestation of the importance high level Niger and Burkina Faso authorities attach to transport facilitation actions as a factor in regional integration," Mr. Kaberuka said. He called for better coordination between both countries to ensure the project’s success.

"It is important to recall that the Dori-Tera road improvement and transport facilitation project on the Ouagadougou-Dori-Tera-Niamey corridor is a single project. The project’s success requires concurrent and coordinated actions. The AfDB will spare no efforts to help you in the realization of the project," he stressed.

The road section - 40 km in Niger and 51 km in Burkina Faso – will be built by SOGEA-SATOM. Besides the rehabilitation work, the project provides for eleven kilometers of road in each of the two cities - Tera and Dori.
