Bamako: International Workshop on Aid Effectiveness

Bamako, 29 March 2006 - Over 150 delegates from 29 Central, West, and North African countries, from regional and civil society organizations, and development organizations in Bamako participated on Tuesday in an international workshop on aid effectiveness to achieve better development results.

Mr. Abou-Bakar Traore, Mali’s Minister of Economy and Finance, opened the "Workshop on the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness:  Implications and Implementation."  He noted that "the workshop gives hope to African populations as it will focus on how to improve their living conditions."

In the Paris Declaration, signed in 2005, donors and partner countries agreed to work together to enhance development effectiveness in partner countries and improve the prospects of achieving the countries’ development goals.  The workshop is focussing on implementing these commitments; It provides a forum to take stock of activities, exchange experiences, and identify good practices for implementation.

In his speech, Mr. Philibert Afrika, Acting Vice President of the African Development Bank, spelt out the aims of the workshop:  "to critically review what has worked and what hasn’t, and make the necessary improvements and adjustments; and to identify the weaknesses and strengths that will lead to better targeting and allow us to scale up our efforts to achieve real development results."  He called on development partners to effectively support government-led processes to prepare, implement, and monitor work to achieve the Paris commitments at the country level.

The workshop is sponsored by the African Development Bank, the World Bank, the Government of France, the United Nations Development Programme and the Development Assistance Committee of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.  It is the second of two workshops to be held on implementing the Paris Commitments in African countries; the first, for eastern and southern African countries, was held in Entebbe, Uganda, in November 2005.
