African Development Bank (AfDB) Group experts and senior pharmaceutical advisers of organizations such as the WHO, the World Bank, UNAIDS, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNIDO, Global Fund, on Monday, November 24, 2008, in Tunis, launched the Interagency Pharmaceutical Coordination (IPC) Group meeting. The objective of the meeting is to coordinate pharmaceutical policies underlying their technical advice to partner countries. The IPC meetings provide occasion for exchange of information on issues faced by development partners in the procurement of drugs and other pharmaceuticals. These issues include quality assurance of drugs, high cost of generic drugs, storage and distribution of drugs, donation of drugs, intellectual property rights, development of pharmaceutical policies, etc. Such meetings, according to AfDB experts, have led to a much better exchange of information between the organizations and more consistency in technical advice given to recipient countries by many development partners involved in pharmaceutical activities. The Bank Group is taking advantage of current meetings to use IPC members for the sensitization of AfDB health and procurement experts on issues relating to the procurement of pharmaceuticals, especially the need to ensure timely provision of good quality drugs. AfDB Vice President Zeinab El-Bakri opened the meeting.
