CRMU co-organizes meeting with NGOs in Maputo, Mozambique
Maputo, Mozambique, May 19th, 2008 - the Compliance Review and Mediation Unit (CRMU) in partnership with the non-governmental organization "Movimento de Educação para Todos" (Movement Education for All) co-organized a seminar entitled "Independent Review Mechanisms: Raising Awareness and Improving Access to Accountability Mechanisms for Communities and Civil Society Organizations". Approximately 40 participants mainly from Mozambique attended the event. Other participants were representatives of NGOs from Ghana, Zambia, Malawi and international NGOs. By introducing the Independent Review Mechanism (IRM) of the African Development Bank and other accountability instruments, the seminar aimed to increase civil society awareness of the various mechanisms in which people affected by a multilateral development bank-financed projects can actively engage to request compliance review or mediation. It has also provided insight into ways of increasing civil society’s awareness and access to these mechanisms. Promoting the Bank’s accountability, increasing its transparency, providing independent fora for civil society requests and improving the effectiveness of the Bank’s operations are the main goals of mechanisms such as the IRM.
