Fighting Poverty with Global Ideas

Opening the Inaugural AfDB Annual Economic Conference (22-24 November 2006, Tunis), President Donald Kaberuka, summarized the conference by paraphrasing the South African Minister of Finance, Trevor Manuel, who said that " until the lions have spoken, the only story to be told will be that of the hunters."

That explains why we are here, President Kaberuka said. We call on researchers to seize this opportunity to interact and exchange information in order to hear the lion’s voice.

Highlighting the Bank’s mission, Mr. Kaberuka said "we are scaling up our efforts to do more, but selectively; to develop excellence in a few key areas and looking at working closely with partners – some of whom have more resources than ourselves."

"But beyond our role as a channel of development financing there is another critical contribution which our countries desperately need – and that is not resources, but policy advice support on how best to do things, on economic reforms, private sector development, how to best exercise ownership," he added.

He also said that the Bank had no monopoly on nor was it a depository of the capacity, our objective is to offer a platform to African researchers so that their voice could be heard. For Mr. Kaberuka, it is about "fighting poverty with ideas, but with everybody’s ideas."
