Libya - AfDB Group supports IWRM National Capacity Enhancements
Tripoli, 13 April 2007 - The African Development Bank (AfDB), jointly with the UN Environmental Programs’ (UNEP) Collaborating Centre on Water and Environment (UCC-Water), and the Global Water Partnership – Mediterranean (GWP-Med) organized on 11-12 April in Tripoli, Libya, a Regional Workshop on "Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in Libya- Current Status and the Way Forward Demonstrated by National, Regional and International Experiences".
Hosted by the General Water Authority of Libya, the workshop dealt with key water sector challenges, strategies in Libya and possible mitigation measures within an IWRM approach. Over 90 experts and managers from 12 countries representing more than 40 national and international organizations met to discuss national, regional and international IWRM experiences and the way forward. The workshop adopted the recommendations of the Study on the "Institutional Development for the Water Sector", as the starting point for implementation of the National Strategy for Water Resources Management for 2000-2025. The African Water Facility (AWF), provided financial support for the technical assistance to the General Water Authority of Libya for undertaking this study, in the framework of the AWF’s objective of enhancing national IWRM capacity in Africa. The African Water Facility (AWF) is an initiative led by the African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW) to mobilize financial resources for water sector development in Africa. The AfDB delegation, led by Mr. Chiji Ojukwu, Manager of the Agriculture and Irrigation Division of the AfDB, was constituted of Mr. Taoufik Rajhi, AfDB Country Economist for Libya, Mr. Yvan Kedaj from AWF and Mr. Hesham Kandil from AfDB Agriculture and Irrigation Division. The Bank’s delegation discussed the continuation of AfDB Group’s support to the effort of the Government of Libya in facing the water sector challenges and realizing its national water policy and ambitious development plans.
