Seminars for Government, Civil Society organizations and staff of the Bank’s Field office on the Bank’s accountability mechanisms

Antananarivo, November 4th, 2008 - CRMU in collaboration with the African Development Bank Integrity and Anti-Corruption Division (IACD) and the Bank’s Field Office in Madagascar co-organized a series of national seminars targeting government officials, civil society and the Bank staff in the country. The events were organized during  November 3-7, 2008. Mr Haja Nirina Razafinjatovo, the Minister of Finance and Budget, acknowledged the establishment of the Bank’s independent review mechanism and anti-corruption strategy  as key to ensuring accountability and transparency of development projects.  Mr. Per Eldar Sovik, Director of CRMU; Mr. Wilfred Frimpong, Chief Investigator IACD;  Amy Yong Esq., Advisor OAGL;  and Mr. Bruno Boedts, the Country Operations Officer, conducted different presentations on the Bank’s projects and accountability mechanisms to seventy five representatives of different government’s departments, heads of projects implementation units and independent accountability organisms.

The civil society seminar was  jointly organized by CRMU, IACD, MGFO and PACT’s off-spring in the country. The event brought together forty specialized civil society organizations active at both the national and local levels representing 19 regions in Madagascar  to engage  them in the learning processes and exchange of information with respect to their role as stakeholders in the Bank’s operations and accountability mechanisms. 

The events also covered two days orientation sessions for the MGFO team on how to follow up with various applications of Bank’s accountability issues, including ethics and  transparency,  and the role they can play in maintaining the use and dissemination of information about  these issues across the different projects’ financed by the Bank in Madagascar.
