The Bank consults with Partners in the health sector
A Bank mission comprised of Messrs. Albert-Eneas Gakusi and P. Madhusoodhanan, both from the African Development Bank Operations Evaluation Department, was recently in Brazzaville, Congo, to consult with other development partners in the health sector.
The mission met with Dr. Luis Gomes Sambo, WHO Regional Director and shared views on better options for health improvement in Africa including increased institutional collaboration with the Bank and other international agencies.
The mission also had a meeting with Dr. Damase Bodzongo, Director General of Health and Mr. Michael Bitemo, Director General in charge of Population in the Ministry of Health of Congo; the World Bank Resident Mission, UNICEF, European Union, and French Co-operation on health sector challenges and their experience in managing Bank’s health projects and programmes.
Finally, the mission met 32 NGO representatives and discussed their perceptions about the international assistance to the health sector and beneficiary participation in policy formulation and implementation of projects and programmes.
"There is a general agreement that unless African governments take proactive actions to address population issues, whatever efforts made to increase human capital will be undermined by high population growth and will result in poor economic performance and low quality of health", Mr. Gakusi said.
