Valiant Women of Peace

The announcement of today’s Nobel Peace Prize winners is an inspiration for women around the world.Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is a true source of pride for the African continent, not just as its first female head of state, but also as a tireless champion of peace, which she has worked hard to bring about in her native Liberia.

Leymah Gbowee is equally deserving of the prize for her efforts to reunite Christian and Muslim women against Liberian warlords, for mobilising women across ethnic and religious dividing lines and ensuring their participation in elections.

Tawakul Karman completes the admirable trio of winners as a human rights and advocacy champion in her native Yemen.

We offer our hearty congratulations to President Johnson Sirleaf, Ms. Gbowee and Ms. Karman and encourage them to keep up their fine work.
