Seminar on “China’s increasing engagement in Africa in the aftermath of the financial crisis”

The seminar is aimed at generating policy-oriented research on the impact of the rising strategic and economic role of China on Africa’s development prospects and its economic and political governance. The seminar will be held in Tunis, Tunisia, on 25-26 March 2010. A selected number of papers will appear in a special issue of the African Development Review, which will be edited by Dr. Ibrahim Elbadawi, Director; Macroeconomic Research Department, Dubai Economic Council. This seminar is financially supported by the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID).

China: Threat or Opportunity?

12/11/2009 - Mauritius is so small that wherever you are in the country you are always so close to the port. While in the fashionable talks of the grave issue of climate change this seems like a premonitory statement, it was actually stated as the opportunity the country offers to investors desiring to go there. Vinaye Anchaz, from the University of Mauritius, who presented a paper titled: “David versus Goliath: Mauritius facing up to China”, was speaking of how absurd it was for investors in his country to ask for plots of land close to the ports.

Shanghai Hosts AfDB Annual Meetings

14/05/2007 - The Shanghai International Convention Center has been a bee-hive of activity as China’s business hub and economic capital prepares to host the Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group on 16-17 May 2007. The Annual Meetings of the Bank Group’s Board of Governors (ministers of finance, economy, planning and, in certain cases, Central Bank governors) representing 77-country shareholders of the multilateral finance institution, is an occasion to review its activities and map out programmes for the coming year, within the framework of ongoing Bank wide reforms.
