06/11/2012 - Africa needs to pay special attention to inclusive growth by creating youth employment, improving agricultural output and investing in quality education and infrastructure. In a well-attended public lecture delivered in Kampala, Uganda, the President said the continent’s demographics pointed to an explosion in the numbers of young people, though employment creation was not keeping pace. He lamented the fact that youth unemployment, at 20 percent last year, remains way above the global average of 10 percent.

05/11/2012 - On the closing day of the 2012 African Economic Conference in Kigali, Rwanda, on Friday, the conference organizers selected the best research paper presented at the conference by a young African scholar. The goal of the prize was to recognize and encourage research among young Africans.

This is a view shared by many economists and top business and academic leaders who converged in Rwanda’s capital Kigali last week for the 7th edition of the African Economic Conference that the African Development Bank organized in conjunction with the United Nations Development Programme and the UN Economic Commission for Africa.

05/10/2012 - Mr. Ebrima Faal, Regional Director at the Southern Africa Resource Center (SARC) of the African Development Bank (AfDB), signed on behalf of the AfDB the agreements for a loan of ZAR 65 million from the AfDB to Trustco Finance (part of the Namibia based “Trustco” group) to support its student lending program in Namibia. The signing ceremony took place in Windhoek, Namibia’s capital. Also taking part in the ceremony were DEG and Proparco who signed the agreements for loans to Trustco Finance of ZAR 50 million each.

29/08/2012 - The African Development Bank Group, UNICEF and the Government of Madagascar signed a US $1-million grant agreement to fund rehabilitation of social infrastructure in the country following the devastating cyclones Giovanna and Irina, which hit the country in February. The signing took place on August 23 in Brickaville, about 250 km east of Antananarivo.

24/07/2012 - The Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) and the African Development Institute of the African Development Bank (ADI/AfDB) call for proposals within the framework of the inaugural edition of the Education Research in Africa Award (ERAA), in collaboration with the Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation (KOAFEC).

23/05/2012 - On May 10, a high level meeting chaired by President Donald Kaberuka, former British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, and Tim Berners-Lee, founder of the Web Foundation elicited a lively debate among 10 Ministers of Education and Science and Technology from Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Uganda; who met with officials of Intel, Cisco, Alcatel-Lucent, HP, Adobe, and Microsoft among other leading technology companies in Africa. Other country governments represented were Benin, Burundi, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Mauritius, Nigeria and Rwanda.

08/05/2012 - The President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. Donald Kaberuka, the former British Prime Minister Rt. Hon Gordon Brown, and renowned computer scientist, and founder of the World Wide Web Foundation, Sir Tim Berners-Lee will convene a high level meeting on Education and Technology entitled “Connecting Africa” at the 22nd World Economic Forum (WEF) on Africa on 10 May, 2012.
