17/07/2012 - Growth in the last 10 years preceding the Arab Spring did not made it possible for North African countries to create enough jobs for the young. The regional unemployment rate among the 15 to 24 year-old age group is on average 23%, which is three to four times higher than that of adults. But the rate is 41% if the discouraged are included: that is, those young inactive people in a position to work but not looking for employment and so are not included in the official statistics.

As was the case in earlier editions, the report focuses on the underlying challenges the region faced prior to the Arab Spring. However, this edition probes the obstacles that led to the Arab Spring. It goes on to explore how political transitions underway will shape North Africa’s options in meeting its economic challenges.

03/05/2012 - In the wake of the Arab Spring, the emerging political landscape in North Africa promises to give new impetus to regional integration efforts, according to a new study from the African Development Bank (AfDB). The report - entitled, Unlocking North Africa's potential through Regional Integration - reviews the prospects for the region as new democratically-elected governments seek to promote inclusive growth and build institutions for good governance. The diversity of resource endowments in the region, coupled with the existing physical infrastructure, represent an important opportunity to further development through integration.
