06/02/2013 - The Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) has approved a US $1 million grant to finalize pre-investment activities for a hybrid renewable energy project in Nosy Be Island in Madagascar. The grant will be used to finance: (i) feasibility studies for a combination of hydro, wind and solar technologies; (ii) technical assistance to the national power utility; (iii) the transactions advisory for a Public Private Partnership. Through this intervention, the African Development Bank (AfDB) will play a catalytic role and pave the way for private investors and other financiers to work towards delivering a sustainable energy solution with huge socio-economic impacts on the island.

25/01/2013 - “Africa needs strong independent energy regulators to attract private investment in its energy sector,” said African Development Bank President Donald Kaberuka on Wednesday, January 23, Day 2 of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. In his meeting with the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Hailemariam Desalgen, and Tony Blair, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Kaberuka discussed how best to galvanize private sector investment to close the energy gap in Africa.

28/12/2012 - The African Development Bank and the Government of the Republic of Zambia signed, on December 19, a loan agreement for US $55 million to support the Itezhi-Tezhi Hydro Power and Transmission Line Project through the construction and operation of a 120 megawatt hydropower plant at Itezhi-Tezhi dam along the Kafue River. This loan was approved by the Bank’s Board of Executive Directors on June 13, 2012.

28/12/2012 - In his welcoming remarks the Zambian Minister of Finance and National Planning Alexander Chikwanda commended African Development Bank President Donald Kaberuka for the support the Bank has provided since 1971 amounting to US $1.4 billion. The Minister also commended the Bank’s initiative and support on the Kazungula Bridge project, which links Botswana and Zambia over the Zambezi River.

26/12/2012 - Three major energy projects financed by the African Development Bank in Ouarzazate, Morocco; Menengai, Kenya; et Bujagali, Uganda; were featured in a film project which captured 25 sustainable energy projects on the African continent in the context of the UN International Year of Sustainable Energy.

21/12/2012 - La Banque africaine de développement (BAD) et le Maroc ont signé, le 19 décembre à Rabat, trois accords de prêt et de garantie ainsi qu’un accord de don pour un montant global de près de 7 milliards de dirhams, soit l’équivalent de 533 millions d’euros. Les cosignataires étaient la représentante résidente de la Banque, Mme Amani Abou-Zeid et le Ministre de l’Economie et des Finances du Maroc, M. Nizar Baraka. La cérémonie s’est déroulée en présence du Directeur général de l’Office national de l’électricité et de l’eau potable (ONEE), M. Ali Fassi Fihri.

20/12/2012 - The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a senior loan of USD 50 million for the expansion of the Azito power plant in Côte d'Ivoire. This facility aims to finance the third phase of the project which consists of converting the existing 288 MW simple-cycle power plant to a combined-cycle power plant, thereby increasing the total generation capacity to 430 MW.
