The high inflation rates that that have been plaguing the countries of East Africa recently could start to fall in 2012 and eventually reach single-digit level, a meeting organised by the African Development Bank (AfDB) in Nairobi heard today.The seminar on ‘Inflation Dynamics in East Africa’ brought together the governors and high officials from the central banks of Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Nigeria to discuss the bout of high inflation recently suffered in the region.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group and the World Food Programme (WFP) will organize, on 20 January 2010, a High Level Technical Meeting in Tunis to discuss past and on-going cooperation between the two organizations, as well as opportunities for consolidating partnership. “The global food and financial crises, the state of continental agriculture and food security, as well as the current strategic directions of the Bank and WFP have heightened the need for innovation in development cooperation between both institutions”, said Mr Aly Abou-Sabaa, AfDB Director for Agriculture and Agro-industry Department.

The Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Jacques Diouf, proposed that this Summit should agree on key actions to tackle the food insecurity situation. As he said “the silent hunger crisis — affecting one sixth of all of humanity — poses a serious risk for world peace and security. We urgently need to forge a broad consensus on the total and rapid eradication of hunger in the world.”
