A Microsoft delegation on Tuesday, September 15, 2009, concluded a two-day working visit to the Bank Group. The visit served as an opportunity for both parties to agree on concrete areas of cooperation on ICT in the fields of health, education, public administration and governance. Countries targeted include Nigeria, Senegal, Angola and Kenya.

The Bank supported a four-day workshop on Revitalizing Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET) for ECOWAS Countries in Abuja, between 17th-20th August, 2009. The primary objective of the workshop was to create a platform for knowledge and experience sharing in reforming, revitalizing and expanding national TVET systems in order to improve skills delivery, employability and mobility of the youth within ECOWAS states. In view of the importance the Bank attaches to the development of human capital for effective economic integration and growth through TVET, it provided conference materials for all the 73 participants from 15 ECOWAS countries. The workshop was launched by the Minister of Education, Sam Egwu.

This conference will engage African ministers of finance and of education in a dialogue, among themselves and with their external partners, on options to sustain—in the current context of a global economic slowdown—Africa’s achievements in education and economic development over the past decade. Ministers from about 30 countries from Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) will be invited, among them all those that have received or are expecting to receive support from the Fast Track Initiative’s Catalytic Fund, and all the six most populous African countries, i.e., Nigeria, Ethiopia, Egypt, DRC, South Africa and Sudan. The invitees will also include the countries’ development partners, the African Union and other key regional governmental and non-governmental organizations.
