Women entrepreneurs constitute one of the key drivers of Africa’s sustainable growth. As Africa’s lead development partner, the AfDB actively supports women entrepreneurs. Under the AWIB (African Women in Business) Initiative, Bank support to the World Association of Women Entrepreneur’s (FCEM) fifty-eighth congress aims at strengthening cooperation and business partnerships between African women entrepreneurs and global women business leaders.

The Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Jacques Diouf, proposed that this Summit should agree on key actions to tackle the food insecurity situation. As he said “the silent hunger crisis — affecting one sixth of all of humanity — poses a serious risk for world peace and security. We urgently need to forge a broad consensus on the total and rapid eradication of hunger in the world.”

11/06/2009 - Italy, which took over the Presidency of the G8 on 1 January 2009, is responsible for hosting and organizing not only the annual Summit but also the preparatory meetings ahead of the three-day summit, to be held on July 8-10, 2009. Fostering sustainable development and fighting poverty in the less advanced countries is a central priority on the G8 Heads of State and Government’s agenda. Numerous development initiatives have been launched and supported by the G8, first and foremost in favor of Africa.
