Increasing women’s access to infrastructure services (energy, transport, water and irrigation), is crucial for women’s economic empowerment and well-being. In 2007 the Multilateral Development Banks Working Group on Gender agreed to jointly enhance the efforts to mainstream a gender perspective into their respective operations in these sectors. To this end it initiated regional workshops to build the capacity of sector experts in the client countries and respective institutions.

An African Development Bank (AfDB) Regional Integration Strategy Paper (RISP) for Eastern Africa will be validated at a workshop scheduled to take place on 11 November in Nairobi, Kenya. The RISP covers Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. It is designed to support for regional infrastructure and institutional capacity building, including trade facilitation.

Similarly, the 14th Ordinary Session of the Conference of Heads of State and Government scheduled to take place in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, from 31 January to 2 February, 2010, will be held on the theme: “Information and Communication Technologies in Africa: Challenges and Prospects for Development.” The AfDB President, Donald Kaberuka, will attend the summit.
