19/05/2010 - The private sector window of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group received, on 19 May 2010, board approval for a USD 40 million equity investment in the African Agriculture Fund (AAF), a private-equity fund designed to respond to the food crisis that severely impacted the continent in 2008 in the wake of escalating food prices and staple export bans.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group and the World Food Programme (WFP) will organize, on 20 January 2010, a High Level Technical Meeting in Tunis to discuss past and on-going cooperation between the two organizations, as well as opportunities for consolidating partnership. “The global food and financial crises, the state of continental agriculture and food security, as well as the current strategic directions of the Bank and WFP have heightened the need for innovation in development cooperation between both institutions”, said Mr Aly Abou-Sabaa, AfDB Director for Agriculture and Agro-industry Department.

The AfDB fully supports World Food Day celebrations as a prime opportunity to increase public awareness of food problems on the African continent. This year’s theme “achieving food security in times of crisis" is a vivid reminder of the recent global food crisis. The day offers a unique opportunity to urgently raise awareness of the issues behind poverty and hunger, reflect on the rising tide of world hunger and take a fresh approach to agricultural and food security policy-making.
