Increasing women’s access to infrastructure services (energy, transport, water and irrigation), is crucial for women’s economic empowerment and well-being. In 2007 the Multilateral Development Banks Working Group on Gender agreed to jointly enhance the efforts to mainstream a gender perspective into their respective operations in these sectors. To this end it initiated regional workshops to build the capacity of sector experts in the client countries and respective institutions.

08/03/2011 - The AfDB Women’s Network launched a new Scholarship Fund for women’s education on Tuesday in Tunis. This initiative was to mark the 100th anniversary of the International Women's Day, organized this year on the theme, “Equal Access to education, Training, Science and Technology: Pathway to Decent Work for Women”. The Bank also held discussions with women who are exemplary in their field of expertise. Tunisia, host country to the AfDB’s Temporary Relocation Agency, maintains an impressive 56% female students enrolled in science subjects.

08/03/2011 - A l’instar de toutes les organisations internationales, le Groupe de la BAD va célébrer, le 8 mars 2011, à Tunis et dans ses 26 bureaux régionaux, la journée internationale de la femme. Ce 8 mars marque également le centenaire de cette commémoration. Cette journée permet de faire le point sur les progrès réalisés par les femmes dans tous les coins du monde et se concentre sur ce qui peut encore être fait afin d'apporter une plus grande égalité et justice pour tous.

Osman-Elasha Balgis

04/03/2011 - To become more active and able to deal effectively with climate change, women need to be empowered and granted greater access to education, extension services and modern technologies, said Osman-Elasha Balgis in an interview on the occasion marking 100 years of International Women’s Day. She also affirmed that emphasis on women’s education, including incentives and scholarships in science is important for sustainable provision of qualified women candidates required to occupy key positions and reduce the existing gap in public and private sector jobs.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) celebrated the centenary of International Women's Day on 8 March 2011 in Tunis and the field offices, with the active participation of Ms. Lalla Ben Barka, Director General Assistant UNESCO, and Zohra Ben Lakhdar, physics professor at Tunis University and winner of the 2005 L'Oreal UNESCO Women in Science.

29/10/2010 - One of the landmarks of the Fifth African Economic Conference held from October 27-29, 2010 in Tunis, Tunisia was the joint-launch by AfDB, UNDP and IDEP of the Gender and Economic Policy Management Initiative (GEPMI-Africa). After the launch on October 28, Ms Winnie Byanyima, UNDP Gender Team Director, who was instrumental in the setting up GEPMI provided additional perspectives on the initiative.
