Women entrepreneurs constitute one of the key drivers of Africa’s sustainable growth. As Africa’s lead development partner, the AfDB actively supports women entrepreneurs. Under the AWIB (African Women in Business) Initiative, Bank support to the World Association of Women Entrepreneur’s (FCEM) fifty-eighth congress aims at strengthening cooperation and business partnerships between African women entrepreneurs and global women business leaders.

27/05/2010 - It was one of the pledges made by President Kaberuka at the end of the successful first African Women Economic Summit (Nairobi, March 2010). The aim of this high-level event was to raise greater awareness about women’s economic empowerment and gender equality. The Chief Operating Officer of the AfDB, Nkosana Moyo on behalf President Kaberuka stated in his opening speech “the importance of bringing the cause of women to the forefront of the development agenda of the continent”.

26/05/2010 - L’un des panels parallèles des Assemblées annuelles de la Banque africaine de développement (BAD), animé hier à l’hôtel Ivoire, portait sur le thème : «Les femmes dans les Etats fragiles». Il a été l’occasion pour les participants de toucher du doigt les questions liées à la vulnérabilité de la femme en période de crise et post-crise et surtout d’appeler à la mise en œuvre des plans d’action s’inscrivant dans le cadre des résolutions 1325 et 1889 du Conseil de sécurité des Nations Unies.

I am particularly pleased that both Cecilia and Hela are internal promotions, demonstrating the development of talent within the Bank. I very much hope that they will be role models for the many younger staff who I know have great potential.

22/03/2010 - The first African Women Economic Summit in Nairobi was a real success. On the afternoon of the final day, the high level audience of 160 African and global decision-makers in the financial and political sectors, policy-makers, regulators, commercial banks, and prominent women entrepreneurs agreed on goals that will bring women centre stage in the financial sector. They pledged to drive change to include more women in finance.
