22/10/2010 - The Boards of Directors on 23 June 2010 appointed Dr. Richard Bissell, the Bank’s new member of the Roster of Experts for the Independent Review Mechanism (IRM). The Bank’s communication team recently met with Dr. Bissell, who accepted to share perspectives on the institution’s IRM. “I think the Bank will be proud of IRM’s impact on development, and especially in providing for broad sharing of the benefits of economic growth with due respect for social and environmental issues,” he said.

24/06/2010 - The Boards of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group on Wednesday, 23 June 2010 in Tunis appointed Mr. Richard Bissell as the new member of the Roster of Experts of the Independent Review Mechanism. Mr. Bissell replaces Mr. Madiodio Niasse, whose term on the Roster ended on 31 May, 2010.

18/06/2010 - The operating rules and procedures of the IRM encourage transparency. All our reports, including decisions made by the President or the Boards are published and posted on the Bank’s website (www.afdb.org/irm). When the IRM is mandated to monitor the implementation of findings and recommendations of compliance reviews and management’s action plans, the IRM monitoring reports are also posted on the website.

08/10/2009 - The AfDB’s Independent Review Mechanism (IRM) has been effective since mid-2006. The purpose of the IRM is to respond to complaints by people and communities who allege they are or likely to be adversely affected by projects financed by the AfDB because of non-compliance with the Bank’s policies and procedures.

We appreciate if you would send us your comments by no later than 25th of October 2009 in order for the consultant to consider your contributions when finalizing his Review Report, which will be presented to the Bank Group’s Boards of Directors in the beginning of December, 2009.

14/05/2009 - Apart from operating as a regional development bank, the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group has put in place mechanisms that assist the institution to effectively execute its operations as well as provide an avenue for people affected by projects financed by the bank to seek redress. This message was delivered at a forum on Safeguarding development results, Wednesday in Dakar, to a keen 2009 AfDB Annual Meetings audience.

28/04/2009 - The Compliance Review and Mediation Unit (CRMU) of the African Development Bank in collaboration with GROOTS, a local NGO, co-organized two community pilot sensitization sessions on the Independent Review Mechanism (IRM) of the Bank in Kenya on April 15 – 16, 2009. The sessions took place respectively in the Ruiru and Juja areas which are crossed by the Thikka Road being financed by the Bank.

12/02/2009 - AfDB participated in a workshop for Ghanaian Civil Society Organization (CSOs) in Accra on 12 and 13 February 2009. The workshop was organized by the Compliance Adviser/Ombudsman of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in cooperation with SEND-Ghana, a national NGO that works to promote good governance.

09/02/2009 - CRMU and the Negotiation and Conflict Management Group (a Lagos-based mediation center) organized a national workshop on 9 February 2009 in Lagos, Nigeria. The workshop brought together 38 participant NGOs from thirteen states in Nigeria- Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Ekiti, Abuja, Ebonyi, Kwara, Osun, Gombe, Plateau, Zamfara, Rivers, Enugu and Delta State-and specialized on governance, environment, gender, accountability, citizens rights and community development.
