17/04/2012 - I had a very successful mission and I feel confident that everything will be ready in time for the 2012 Annual Meetings of the Bank Group in Arusha. It was very pleasing to witness firsthand the commitment from the Head of State, President Kikwete and the Minister of Finance, Hon. Mkulo for the dedicated involvement and facilitation required for the successful and timely completion of all the arrangements for these meetings.

05/04/2012 - Some issues linked to inclusive growth, such as voice and accountability are political in nature and need to be handled politically by national governments. However, the Bank Group needs to continue paying more attention to wider access issues linked to its infrastructure and economic development projects and programs.

14/03/2012 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) and the World Customs Organization (WCO) have recently signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening the efforts of both institutions towards enhancing capacity building and customs modernization in Africa. While acknowledging that “many African Customs administrations are lagging behind others”, the World Customs Organization’s Secretary General, Kunio Mikuriya, is optimistic about Africa’s ability to strengthen its customs system. “Many African customs administrations have obtained political support for customs modernization initiatives,” he said in an interview.

13/03/2012 - As lawyers from central and west Africa meet in Cameroon this week to discuss ways to improve legal support for doing business in the two regions, the African Legal Services Facility Director, Stephen Karangizi shares his perspectives on the functioning of the Facility, and its impact on African countries ten years after its creation was proposed. He also touched upon the ALSF’s partnership with the Pan African Lawyers Union. “One major impact of our actions is that we have contributed to raising awareness on the need for African countries to negotiate better contracts.” Read the interview.

08/03/2012 - I look forward to the day when I will no longer be referred to as the first and only female president in Africa. The women of Africa are empowering themselves and taking on leadership roles in all facets of society, and I am happy to serve as a role model and trailblazer for those who will come after me. As for balancing family life and my responsibilities as President, let me say that by the time I became President in 2006, my sons were all grown men, pursuing successful professional careers and with families of their own.
28/02/2012 - The ADB successfully organised the first regional consultation on its Civil Society Engagement Framework in Libreville, Gabon, last week. Key representatives among the 31 participants described the talks as meaningful and positive.
