06/02/2013 - The Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) has approved a US $1 million grant to finalize pre-investment activities for a hybrid renewable energy project in Nosy Be Island in Madagascar. The grant will be used to finance: (i) feasibility studies for a combination of hydro, wind and solar technologies; (ii) technical assistance to the national power utility; (iii) the transactions advisory for a Public Private Partnership. Through this intervention, the African Development Bank (AfDB) will play a catalytic role and pave the way for private investors and other financiers to work towards delivering a sustainable energy solution with huge socio-economic impacts on the island.

01/10/2012 - Compared to the rest of the country, southern Madagascar experiences cyclical droughts that threaten the population’s food security. In general, the country’s agricultural performance has remained weak, mainly due to low yields, poor basic infrastructure and lack of rural credit. To overcome these constraints, the government has developed sector policies and strategies that notably provide for the rehabilitation of irrigation areas such as the Lower Mangoky Scheme.

29/08/2012 - The African Development Bank Group, UNICEF and the Government of Madagascar signed a US $1-million grant agreement to fund rehabilitation of social infrastructure in the country following the devastating cyclones Giovanna and Irina, which hit the country in February. The signing took place on August 23 in Brickaville, about 250 km east of Antananarivo.

29/06/2012 - Le Conseil d’administration de la Banque africaine de développement a approuvé, le 27 juin 2012, une deuxième prorogation de la période couverte par le document de stratégie pays pour Madagascar jusqu’en 2013. Les objectifs de la stratégie sur cette période d’extension sont de : (i) contribuer à réduire la fragilité du pays et la vulnérabilité des populations en apportant une réponse à certains besoins pressants du pays ; (ii) renforcer la gouvernance économique et financière ; et (iii) préparer un réengagement plus rapide de la Banque en cas de normalisation de la situation politique, à travers la réalisation d’une série d’études analytiques et de préparations des projets.

18/06/2012 - Public finance is not enough to meet Africa’s growing need for better water and sanitation, said a senior African Development Bank (AfDB) official at a conference on the subject. Private funding must also play its part, he said.

02/05/2012 - Traditional fishing in Madagascar is practiced at national level by around 59,000 fishermen mainly along the coast and within coral reefs, especially in the south-western province of Tulear. The radius of action of fishing canoes is below 10 km.

27/06/2011 - The Southern Africa region loomed large on the Bank’s operational radar in 2009, when loan and grant approvals to the countries climbed to USD 5.44 billion (UA 3.40 billion), from USD 769.44 million (UA 475.9 million) the previous year; representing over 600 percent increase. The numbers were propelled by two budget support loans amounting to USD 2.42 billion (UA1.51 billion) approved for Botswana and Mauritius, to help mitigate the impact of the global economic and financial crisis in these countries.
