05/12/2012 - Cairo, December 5, 2012: Prime Minister Hisham Kandil reaffirmed today that the government is committed to fighting unemployment during the opening session of the “Youth Employment: Building the Future of Egypt” conference hosted by the African Development Bank (AfDB) in collaboration with the Social Fund for Development (SFD). Kandil said he would accomplish this through the formation of a ministerial committee under his auspices that aims to create 750,000 jobs by supporting small businesses with the support of the SFD.

07/11/2012 - A robust structural transformation is critical to shape a country’s ability to generate a faster and more inclusive growth that is required to tackle social challenges, such as unemployment and poverty. Structural transformation driven by export is highly relevant for Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia, countries where several trade strategies and export promotion policies have been undertaken but are yet to take full advantage of their export-led growth strategies. This study considers how increasing productivity and moving up the value chain could enhance economic development in North Africa.

18/07/2012 - Forecasting the Costs and Benefits of Implementing Basel III for North African Emerging Economies looks at the potential impact of Basel III on Tunisia and Egypt. The study demonstrates that Egypt would be faster to recover than Tunisia, largely due to the fact that its banking sector is adequately prepared to meet the capital adequacy requirements demanded by Basel III. Moreover, the study finds that the application of Basel III would set in motion three unwanted impacts: First, the ability to raise more capital would significantly impair bank profitability increasing the likelihood that stability would come at the cost of decreased lending capacity.
