14/10/2011 - Africa is the youngest region in the world. Youngsters make up more than two thirds of Africa’s population, yet they are more likely than adults to be unemployed. In some countries, such as South Africa, Tunisia and Morocco, youth unemployment rates are up to 3 times higher than those of adults. This serious jobs gap needs to be addressed rapidly or else it could translate into social tensions as recently witnessed during the Arab Spring.

29/09/2011 - The African Development Bank Board of Directors has approved a USD 24-million loan to finance Zambia’s fourth poverty reduction budget support program. The African Development Fund (ADF) loan is part of USD 159 million budget support operation financed by World Bank ($30 m loan), European Commission ($43.5 m grant), UK’s Department for International Development ($41.6 m grant), Germany ($13.6 m grant), and Finland ($6.8 grant).

22/09/2011 - The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group on 20 September 2011 in Tunis approved loans and grants amounting to 160 million Units of Account* (USD 257.6 million) to finance public sector growth support as well as water and sanitation projects in Burkina Faso, Mozambique, and Niger.

09/09/2011 - On 7 September, the African Development Bank Board of Executive Directors approved a USD 22.5m African Development Fund loan to the Republic of Mali to finance a major digital complex in the capital, Bamako. “This project is important for my country and the first of its kind in West Africa. With the Bamako Digital Complex, before December 2011, Mali will be connected through fiber optic to six out of its seven neighbors.

15/07/2011 - The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a USD 25-million equity investment in Vantage Capital Fund II (VCF II). This second-generation multi-sector fund, designed to reach USD 250 million, will provide mezzanine financing – a combination of debt and equity instruments – to selected portfolio companies across the Africa.
