18/03/2013 - The Development Effectiveness Review (DER) is a series of publications reviewing the African Development Bank’s (AfDB or Bank) contribution to Africa’s development results. Beginning with the first Annual Development Effectiveness Review published in 2011, the DER series has promoted transparency and accountability to our member countries and stakeholders. It also helps us ensure that our operations are continually improving. In 2012, we have published a series of DERs examining aspects of the Bank’s portfolio, including fragile states, regional integration, governance and the Bank’s country program in Rwanda.

05/05/2011 - This year’s Global Monitoring Report 2011 entitled “Improving the Odds of Achieving the MDGs - Heterogeneity, Gaps and Challenges”, reviewed the evolution of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) towards their achievement deadline set for 2015 by World Leaders in 2000. The Global Monitoring Report is a product of a strategic collaboration of multilateral development finance institutions led by the World Bank and which includes the AfDB.

07/04/2011 - The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has unanimously approved a new framework for boosting the effectiveness of the Bank’s lending. Adopted at a time when economic growth has yet to be translated to meaningful poverty reduction and jobs for Africa’s rapidly expanding population, the roadmap goes beyond the mechanics of aid delivery targeted by the Paris Declaration to commit the Bank to multiple actions designed to accelerate regional member countries’ achievement of their development potential.

29/03/2011 - A two-day AfDB/GIZ workshop on strategic environmental and social assessment ended on March 22, 2011 in Tunis with the presentation of an AfDB brochure on “Environmental and Social Procedures Basics for Public Sector Operations”. The brochure, produced by Compliance and Safeguards Division, provides a simplified step-by-step project cycle and an action/output guide for Bank staff in environment and social assessment operations.

21/03/2011 - A consultative meeting on strategic environmental and social assessment co-sponsored by the African Development Bank (AfDB) opened on Monday, 21 March 2011 in Tunis, Tunisia. The discussions focused on the evolution of assessment tools in international organizations and use of such tools at the AfDB. The meeting marks an important milestone in the Bank’s commitment to the Paris Declaration and the Accra Action Agenda as it brings together experts in the field to identify leading trends and practices in the field.

The Bank is committed to Africa’s transformation to a green economy. To this end, the Bank will from 21-22 March 2011, host an international seminar on strategic environment and social assessments (SESA). The seminar aims at deepening the AfDB’s implementation of more environmentally and socially sustainable projects and programmes. Coodinated by the Compliance and Safeguards Division, the seminar will bring together at Hotel Sharaton, Tunis, leading international agencies involved in implementing strategic environmental and social assessments.

15/03/2011 - One of the landmarks in the Bank’s efforts to implement more environmentally and socially sustainable programs and projects and consequently support Africa’s transformation to a green economy is the update of its Integrated Safeguards System. The Bank will on 21-22 March 2011 host an international seminar on SESA. As a prelude to the seminar which brings together MDBs, several bilateral donors and regional participants, ERCU has approached the Compliance and Safeguards Division Manager, Anthony Nyong for more information.
