06/06/2011 - The financial package includes a loan of USD 265 million approved by the AfDB’s Board of Directors on 30 May 2011, as well as a USD 100 million concessional loan from the Clean Technology Fund. The financial package will support South Africa’s national electricity utility, Eskom, in implementing a USD 1.3 billion renewable energy project introducing concentrated solar power to sub-Saharan Africa and the first utility-scale wind power plant to South Africa.

19/05/2011 - The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group through its private sector window approved on Wednesday, a €150-million senior loan to finance the Kalagadi manganese mining project; the Bank’s first mining beneficiation and industrial project in South Africa.

06/04/2011 - The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) today approved the 2011-2012 Regional Integration Strategy Paper for Southern Africa. Regional integration is one of the organisation’s priorities, , as reflected in its 2008-2011 Medium-Term Strategy, its Strategic and Operational Framework for Regional Operations and the its 2009-2012 Regional Integration Strategy.

As one of the main implementers of the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) in Africa, the African Development Bank (AfDB) will host the 2011 CIF Partnership Forum in Cape Town, South Africa from 24-25 June 2011. AfDB Vice President, Bobby Pittman, is expected to give opening remarks and welcome over 400 delegates expected from recipient countries, other multilateral development banks, UN agencies, donor countries and other stakeholders.

15/03/2011 - African Development Bank (AfDB) President Donald Kaberuka has affirmed his institution’s strong commitment to enhancing regional integration and growth in Southern Africa. Addressing the media close to the end of a six-day official visit to the region, Dr. Kaberuka said the AfDB had done well in terms of the volume of its support to South Africa and the broader SADC region but still had to do more in view of the challenges that still abound.

07/03/2011 - South Africa is a hub for growth and regional integration in Southern Africa. It accounts for 71.5% of regional GDP and is a key player in NEPAD and SADC. About 70% of intra-regional investment flows in the region is conducted by South African firms. South African investment played a large role in neighbouring countries, accounting for between 9% and 20% of GDP in Lesotho, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia and Swaziland.
