04/10/2012 - As many countries in Africa experience impressive economic growth, the continent has made significant gains in health such as an overall reduction in child mortality. However, gains made vary and certain segments of the population remain vulnerable. For example, while child mortality is on the decline in Uganda, the maternal mortality rate is still high and estimated at 435 deaths per 100,000 live births. About 30 per cent of households in the capital Kampala are run by women, meaning Uganda’s high maternal death rate has far reaching effects societally and economically.

10/09/2012 - The Community Agricultural Infrastructure Improvement Programme – Project I (CAIIP-1) resulted from a comprehensive review of Uganda’s agricultural sector, which was carried out in 2005 by the Ugandan government in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB). The review, which was undertaken under the auspices of Uganda's Plan for Modernization of Agriculture, identified a number of investment gaps especially with regard to infrastructure - for access to markets, and for agro-processing, environmental and natural resource management.

19/07/2012 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 opened books on its 125 billion Ugandan shilling medium-term note (MTN) programme. The first issue of the programme, which is a 10-year, 12.5 billion Ugandan shilling bond is open for subscription through July 20, 2012. The coupon to be re-priced at two year intervals will be pegged at 85 percent of the yield on Uganda's two-year government bond benchmark.

18/06/2012 - Public finance is not enough to meet Africa’s growing need for better water and sanitation, said a senior African Development Bank (AfDB) official at a conference on the subject. Private funding must also play its part, he said.

04/05/2012 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) has received approval from the Government of Uganda to issue bonds denominated in Uganda Shillings on the Ugandan capital market. Pierre Van Peteghem, Treasurer of the African Development Bank Group, said that following the Government’s authorization, the multilateral bank is currently processing all regulatory steps required for the launch of a Note Program.

26/03/2012 - A new survey from the African Development Bank (AfDB) of the East African banking sector has found that it eager to do business with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The banks surveyed in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia view SMEs as ‘highly profitable’. They are also important providers of employment in the region.

02/03/2012 - A group of nine Executive Directors undertook a consultation mission to Uganda from 22 to 28 February 2012. The mission held meetings with the minister for finance, planning and economic development; sector ministers; the speaker of the National Assembly; chairpersons of five parliamentary committees, development partners and representatives of the private sector and civil society.

29/02/2012 - The African Governance Outlook (AGO), a collaborative initiative between the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) aims to provide an effective African-based diagnostic tool on financial governance on a regional scale. ACBF has a mandate to develop capacity in Africa across a spectrum of areas including financial management and accountability through good governance.
