03/09/2012 - Backed by the African Development Bank (AfDB), Niger has received approval from the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) for US $22 million to support its Water Resources Mobilization and Development Project. It seeks to boost food production in 10 rural districts in Niger, and ultimately improve the livelihoods of some 700,000 people, by implementing mini dams, wells and boreholes, irrigation schemes, erosion control and other water management measures along with the social infrastructure and training needed at the local level to ensure sustainability. Moreover, climate resilient seeds and farming techniques will be introduced to increase agricultural production.

More recently, with the launch of the UN Decade for Water and Sanitation in the 1990s, followed by the UN Decade for Action – ‘Water for Life’ (2005-2015), access to water and sanitation has been recognized as a basic human right. The importance of the water supply and sanitation (WSS) sector is further underscored by its inclusion in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

AWF and NEPAD to Boost Economic Development in the Songwe River Basin

09/08/2012 - An estimated 150,000 people from pastoral communities, including students and teachers from six schools based in Kenya’s Baringo, Kiambu West and Laikipia districts, are to benefit from a €690,000 grant from the African Water Facility (AWF) approved by the AfDB on Friday, July 6.

27/07/2012 - Casamance, located in southwestern Senegal, has been involved in a struggle for independence since the 1980s. The Rural Development Support Project in Casamance (PADERCA) falls within the framework of the Economic and Social Activities Revitalization Program in Casamance, established by the Senegalese government since 2004 and aims at supporting the restoration of peace in this part of the country.

17/07/2012 - The economic crisis of the 1980s, exacerbated by the armed conflicts of the 1990s in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has resulted in a drop in farmer assistance, desertion of farms and lack of maintenance of rural roads. This situation has specifically led to decreased productivity, difficulties in the supply of farm inputs and equipment, and increased inaccessibility to production areas, thus giving rise to food insecurity.
