22/11/2012 - For the first time, the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) took place in Africa. This year’s forum on "enhancing the human development of migrants and their contribution to the development of communities and states" was held in Mauritius on November 21-22 2012. It focused on labor mobility and beyond-the-border skills as well as jobs for African youth.

21/11/2012 - The First Africa CEO Forum, a high-level meeting for the African private sector, opened on Tuesday November 20, in Geneva in the presence of 560 delegates from 32 countries, including more than 300 leaders of major private African enterprises. Approximately 100 investors and financiers, among the most influential in Africa, as well dignitaries from Africa and the rest of the world, attended the event.

19/11/2012 - The Government of Senegal hosted the West Africa Regional Conference on Youth Employment on Saturday, November 10 in Dakar. The one-day conference, co-organized by the African Development Bank and the OECD Development Centre, brought together West African Ministers, youth organizations, civil society and the private sector.

12/11/2012 - African countries ought to reject the Economic Partnership Agreements that the European Union is currently trying to force on them and instead get it to sign migration agreements that have the effect of benefiting both parties equally, Shantayanan Devarajan, the World Bank’s Chief Economist for Africa, told the African Economic Conference in Kigali, Rwanda, on November 1.

07/11/2012 - A robust structural transformation is critical to shape a country’s ability to generate a faster and more inclusive growth that is required to tackle social challenges, such as unemployment and poverty. Structural transformation driven by export is highly relevant for Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia, countries where several trade strategies and export promotion policies have been undertaken but are yet to take full advantage of their export-led growth strategies. This study considers how increasing productivity and moving up the value chain could enhance economic development in North Africa.

06/11/2012 - Africa needs to pay special attention to inclusive growth by creating youth employment, improving agricultural output and investing in quality education and infrastructure. In a well-attended public lecture delivered in Kampala, Uganda, the President said the continent’s demographics pointed to an explosion in the numbers of young people, though employment creation was not keeping pace. He lamented the fact that youth unemployment, at 20 percent last year, remains way above the global average of 10 percent.

05/11/2012 - On the closing day of the 2012 African Economic Conference in Kigali, Rwanda, on Friday, the conference organizers selected the best research paper presented at the conference by a young African scholar. The goal of the prize was to recognize and encourage research among young Africans.

05/11/2012 - Education is the surest bet to get all segments of society involved in and benefiting from economic growth and transformation. This is a view shared by many economists and top business and academic leaders who converged in Rwanda’s capital Kigali last week for the 7th edition of the African Economic Conference that the African Development Bank organized in conjunction with the United Nations Development Programme and the UN Economic Commission for Africa.
