Objectives
The objectives of the RWSSI programme is to accelerate access to safe water and sustainable sanitation to contribute to the achievement of the national target and the Millinium Develpment Goals
Rationale
Accesss of Water supply and sanitatio facilities in the Gambia is low compared to the MDGs. As a result the incidence of water-brone disease is very high. Government of the Gambia is desireous to reduce the incidence of the water related diseased by increasing the access of water supply and sanitation facilities by implmenting the RWSSI Programme in the country in 2007 so that the MDGs are met.
Benefits
The project will have direct and indirect benefits economic and social benefits to the population of the area. The availablity of adequate and potable water supply and sanition facilities would allow the population healthier and productive lives. The avialability of these services would enable the rural population to devote the time previoulsy spent on fetching water on other productive activities. Further, access to potable water supply and adequate saniation facilities would have direct health benefits through reduction of water borne diseases, thus leading to reduced expediture on medication, reduced abseteesim and increase in productivity of the labour force. The programme would also encourage school attendance espeically for girls.
