Description
The proposed project includes the foloowing components:
1. Provision of additional capacity through construction of additional lanes, and strengthening of existing carriageway 2. Construction of Interchanges at sic locations (Pangani, Muthaiga, GSU, Kasarami, Githurai, Eastern Bypast) 3. Construction Supervision Services 4. Project Audit Services.
Objectives
The sector goals of the project are to:
(i) contribute to improve the accessibility, affordability, and reliability of the transport infrastructure system to promote economic growth and socio economic development in Kenya; and
(ii) contribute to regional integration in the eastern and horn of Africa regions. The objectives of the project are:
(i) Improve road transport services along the Nairobi-Thika corridor and enhance urban mobility within the metropolitan area by reducing traffic congestion;
(ii) Contribute to the development of a sustainable urban public transit system for the Nairobi Metropolitan Area; and
(iii) Promote private sector participation in the management, operation, and financing of road infrastructure in Kenya.
Rationale
The existing highway was constructed to bitumen standard in the early 1970's and re-sealed with an overlay in the early 1990's. This highway currently operates beyond capacity carrying more than 30,000 vehicles per day. In addition, its condition has deteriorated requiring a rehabilitation. Therefore to accomodate the exiting and future traffic, the highway needs substantial inprovement to increase its capacity which will entail the construction of additional lanes and the removal of all at grade intersection to be replaced by interchanges.

The Nairobi-Thika highway has a strategic importance at the local, regional, national, and international levels. A large number of groups and economic activities will benefit from the implementation of the project including
(i) the local population of farmers and traders;
(ii) transport operators, shippers, and vehicle owners;
(iii) Kenya and Ethiopian importers and exporters;
(iv) trade, tourism, agriculture, and industrial sectors.
