(ii) erection of 76 of 33/0.4 kV pole mounted transformer stations;
(iii) construction of 72 km of 0.4/0.22 kV overhead lines;
(iv)installation of 1,700 street light points
(v) provision of consultancy services (engineering + audit)for connecting 7053 consumers including households, service facilities, small businesses, fisheries and irrigated agriculture.
Objectives
The objective of the project is to rehabilitate and extend the national power grid to rural and peri-urban centres to support economic growth towards reduction of poverty and improvement of standard of living of the rural population. The project when completed in June 2006 will provide
(i) electricity to about 21 rural towns (7053 consumers), including households, small industries and businesses, and service facilities, and
(ii) develop human capacity in the sub-sector (train 6 Senior Managers, 14 Middle Managers and 42 staff in various disciplines) and strengthen the Utility's Training Center.
Rationale
The project is initiated as part of infrastructure development for rural towns. It would supply cheap hydropower to 21 rural towns in four provinces. The unit Kwh cost of supplying the towns from the project is by more than half cheaper than supplying them from diesel generation. The proposed project for ADF financing is a priority project in the energy sector policy of GOM and is refelected in the Poverty Reduction Strategic Paper (PRSP). It is also fits into the Bank Group's strategy to promote stronger sustainable economic development and poverty reduction in Mozambique.
Benefits
The project will initially provide electricity to 7053 consumers including households, basic services and irrigated agriculture.The project will aslo enable the population in the surrounding, which is estimated at 400,350, to easily access electricity in the medium-term.
