Description
The project activities to be financed from the MIC Trust Fund grant have been categorized into four (4) distinct components as follows:
a.Assess and advise on the potential and economic viability of mariculture in Namibia [along the coast in the Karas, Erongo and Kunene Regions of Namibia]; and assess the market demand for Namibian grown shellfish. This will include the planning and phasing of the various activities for a sustainable development of the sector to contribute to Namibia economic development and the eradication of poverty;
b.Assess and advise on the potential of inland freshwater fish farming in 12 regions of Namibia and the strategic options;
c.Build capacity, by training of 10 Fisheries officers in the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources through field activities for 20 days;
d.Build capacity for 12 Extension staff in the Ministry of Fisheries Marine Resources for 15 days.
A firm with aquaculture specialists, relevant experience and know-how in feasibility studies will be recruited to conduct the required study and prepare the Master Plan . The consultancy will involve extensive consultations with stakeholders in the preparation, review and validation of the Master Plan.
The expected outputs of the project include the following:
1.An Aquaculture Master Plan for the development of Aquaculture in Namibia. The master plan will include information about the potential and economic viability of mariculture in Namibia including zones where sustainable and land based mariculture projects can be developed and indicating the market demand for Namibian grown shellfish and the potential of inland freshwater fish farming in Namibia;
2.Improved skills for fisheries officers, who will be able to implement the contents of the Master Plan;
3.Improved skills in the extension activities of extension officers in the Ministry of Fisheries Marine Resources.
Objectives
The objectives of this proposal are to source consultants to (1) develop an Aquaculture Master Plan for Namibia and (2) to provide institutional support for the development of inland aquaculture throughout the country.
