The goal of the project, which falls under the Program to revive economic and social activities in Casamance put in place by the Government and supported by the donor community, is to bolster the process of return of peace in the region. With a duration period of five years, the specific objective of the project is to support rural development through the conservation and development of “water, soil and forest” resources currently under serious threat. Based on participatory planning, the project will help develop nearly 15,000 ha of farm lands, build the capacities of farmers’ organizations, especially those operated by women, improve the professionalization of production channels and provide special support for social infrastructure. The main component of the project include: :
- Natural Resources Conservation and Development;
- Local Development and Capacity Building; and
- Project Management.
Benefits
Through the dissemination of simple productive land restoration and environmental protection techniques, the involvement of communities in these activities and impact assessment, the project will contribute significantly to reversing the process of degradation of natural soils. On the whole, project activities will help eradicate the major man-made causes of the degradation of environmental resources through:
- The recovery of 13,500 hectares of degraded soils following the rehabilitation or construction of salt control dykes and internal development of protected areas;
- The promotion of private nurseries and peripheral plantations;
- The regeneration of the mangrove over nearly one thousand hectares;
- The restoration and maintenance of soil fertility through the adoption of water and soil conservation techniques;
- The development of fruit tree cultivation and the restoration of palm plantations in specific valleys;
- The improvement of the health and educational conditions through the rehabilitation or construction of health centers and schools.
