Objectives

The objective of the project is to secure, improve and extend the sustainable supply of electricity to consumers in Arusha,Mwanza, Shiniyanga and Dar Es Salaam. The project also aims at helping TANESCO increase its customer base by supplying electricity to new consumers.

Rationale

The electricity sub sector has been identified among the key sectors in the Povery Reduction Strategy Paper. Given the low rate of electrification in the country, Tanzania is faced with a situation where it must scale up its investments to scale up electricity services in the rural areas and has therefore included rural electrification as one of its main pillars of development. The choice of schemes that have been targeted for electrification in rural and peri-urban areas will go a long way to contribute to improving the electrcity access in the country. Furthermore, rehabilitation of 4 substations in Dar Es Salaam and one Arusha will improve the quality and reliability of supply to consumers.

Benefits

It is anticipated that the project will provide benefits to the consumers in zones by providing electricity that will help the entrepreneurs to set up some small scale industries that will create jobs. The residents of the areas selected will also be able to utilize electricity in preserving medicine and food which are very important for their survival. More importantly, the energy provided will help in cooking thus relieving women and children the burden of searching for firewood for cooking, an activity which is time consuming and environmentally unfriendly.
