The project consist of:
(i) Upgrading of the existing gravel road between Gayaza - Kalagi (20km) to bituminous class 2 standard road with 6.0 m wide carriageway; and
(ii) consultancy services for supervision of works.
The objective of the project is to reduce transport costs by minimizing the maintenance and vehicle operating costs and improving safety between Gayaza - Kalagi and the districts served by the road, in order to promote agricultural production.
The Gayaza - Kalagi road is a key link serving the rich agricultural Central Region which is also heavily populated. In 1990, the population stood at 3.2 million. Major crops grown in the area include: plantains(matoke), beans, cowpeas, maize, potatoes, cassava, simsim etc. As a result of these economic preoccupation the road has fairly heavy road vehicle traffic ranging from 250 to 600 AADT which necessitate its upgrading to bitumen standard.
The project benefits are:
(i) reduced vehicle operations costs;
(ii) reduced maintenance costs;
(iii) travel time savings; and regional integration.
