Description

The key activities of the study are:

1. Lessons learned; 2. Rapid erosion and sedimentation assessment; 3. Identification of energy options; 4. Review of population and education policies; 5. Capacity building needs assessment; 6. Regional cost-benefits analysis; 7. Broad stakeholder consultation and socio-economic analysis; 8. Environmental awareness strategy; 9. Ranking of activities; and 10.Preparation of terms of reference for the above.

Objectives

The project objective is to establish a sustainable framework for the management of selected watersheds in the sub-basin in order to improve the living conditions of the people, enhance agricultural productivity, protect the environment, reduce sediment transport and siltation of infrastructure, and prepare for sustainable development oriented investment.

Rationale

The overriding regional significance of this project will be erosi on control leading to decreased siltation and sedimentation in downstream river/reservoir reaches, which will increase reservoir life, improve hydropower production and irrigation efficiency, as well as protect critical aquatic habitats. A second important regional benefit will be an overall increase in land productivity, which will yield higher agricultural outputs, and thus enhance food security and alleviate poverty.

Benefits

The study will lead to a better understanding and recommended solutions to the issues and constraints of the sub-basin watershed management task. The main output will address the root causes of land degradation, soil erosion, sedimentation, and soil fertility loss. The study will also develop a number of project proposals to be implemented to address the findings of the study.
