The proposed investment is an equity participation in Business Partners International Southern African SME Fund (


Objectives

2.1. This project emanates from a proposal made by BPI to the Bank requesting an equity amount not exceeding USD7 million to BPI SA, an investment Fund targeting total capital commitments of USD40M to invest in SMEs in Zambia, Namibia, Malawi and Zimbabwe. This presents an opportunity for the Bank to invest in an SME financier that has shown persistence in understanding the needs of the sub-Saharan African SME market and a commitment to tuning its successful underlying model to the needs of different countries. BPI SA also seeks a parallel Technical Assistance (TA) Facility of USD1.5 M from donors, in which the Bank will not participate.
