Description
The Medupi power plant is a pulverised coal fired power plant will have about 4800 MW capacity to generate electricity during base load. It will comprise of six turbo generators of about 800 MW each. The major components of the project are given below: ¢Boilers ¢Turbo-generators ¢Main civil works ¢Water Treatment Plant ¢Electrical Installation ¢Chimney and Silo ¢LP Services ¢Control and Instrumentation ¢Ash Dump and Dam ¢Coal stockyard ¢Flue Gas Desulphurisation Plant
The power evacuation system for the project includes 270 km 400 kV double circuit Medupi-Dinaledi looped in and out of Spitskop and single circuit Medupi -Marang 400 kV transmission lines. The supply of coal is being assured by EXXARO- a coal mining company of South Africa -from Grrotegeluk mine.
The water supply to Medupi power plant will be provided by raising the level of existing Mokolo dam serving Matimba power station. The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry has confirmed the availability of water to meet ESKOM's requirement for this plant.
Objectives
To make available adequate electricity generating and transmission infrastructure to meet demand from economic sectors, social institutions and households in order to support the economic growth and competitiveness of South African economy in accordance with the targets of ASGI-SA.
Rationale
The project is consistent with the goals of the CSP for South Africa (2008-12), which proposes three pillars:
(i) Enhancing Private Sector Competitiveness
(ii) Partnership for Regional Integration and Development and
(iii) Knowledge Management and Capacity Building. The pillar1 envisages the following intermediate outcomes:
(i) improvement of infrastructure services and
(ii) improved financial intermediation for small and medium enterprises. The proposed project is in support of improvement of infrastructure services for enhancing private sector competitiveness.
Benefits
The power plant at Medupi will supply 4800 MW during base load period.
