Overall Objective

Poverty reduction in Cape Verde.

Specific Objectives

The project aims to:

  • Improve the vocational skills of the target groups, particularly women and unemployed youth;
  • Increase access of the poor to basic social services, and
  • Develop the productive capacity of disadvantaged persons.

Description and Expected Outcomes

The project will make it possible to provide literacy education as well as train and integrate 3,000

disadvantaged persons into the economic sector; provide 3,000 loans for income-generating activities; put up about 130 basic socio-economic infrastructure in 120 communities; build institutional capacity at the local, municipal and central levels in order to raise more awareness of issues of poverty and for more effective poverty reduction. Over 64 000 poor, at least 60% of whom are women, will benefit from the project’s activities.

 

Expected Outcomes

  • Literacy training of more than 11 532 people, more than half of whom are women.
  • Information, education and communication campaigns among more than 50 000 people coveringthemes such as hygiene and HIV/AIDS as well as training of outreach workers.
  • Construction and equipping of 57 nursery schools and supply of teaching material.
  • Provision of 1,738 drinking water supply and sanitation points for 25 275 people.
  • Construction of 258 social housing for the elderly.
  • Provision of credit amounting to ECV 81 million to 4 312 people with a repayment rate of about 95%.
